Core 5.0 update: alpha testing & performance comparison

With development of the Solar Core 5.0 continuing on towards a new level of excellence in blockchain core applications, we feel it is prudent to give the community an update on recent achievements. While there’s still work to be done, the strides we’ve made are worth celebrating.

Alpha

The alpha version of Solar Core 5.0 is currently being tested internally and is in sync with the Solar mainnet. Serving as a relay node, this version has already demonstrated substantial speed improvements. To highlight this, we compared the sync times from block 0 to the current block height (about 8,645,000 blocks at the time of testing) between the new Solar Core 5.0 (alpha) and the currently released version, Solar Core 4.3.1 (mainnet).

Solar Core 5.0 (alpha): 17 minutes and 7 seconds average
Solar Core 4.3.1 (mainnet): 5 hours, 13 minutes and 20 seconds average

This marks an impressive 18.3x increase in syncing speed with the new alpha build. It’s important to note that the 17-minute average sync time in the alpha version is largely due to network constraints when receiving blocks from peers, underscoring the core’s remarkable efficiency improvements despite these external factors.

Further performance comparisons

To provide more context, we conducted several cryptographic function tests and block processing comparisons.

Cryptographic Function Performance

The first set of tests measured the time taken to execute various cryptographic functions. The results, illustrated in the graph below, show a remarkable improvement in efficiency with Solar Core 5.0.

Block Processing

The second graph demonstrates the processing time for full blocks containing 150 transactions. Solar Core 5.0 processes a full block in under 1 millisecond and can verify every block and transaction in the current mainnet in under one minute. Overall, the new Solar Core 5.0 (alpha) is approximately 20x faster than Solar Core 4.3.1 (mainnet).

Conclusion

Illustrated in the graph below, show a remarkable improvement in efficiency with Solar Core 5.0.

The advancements in Solar Core 5.0 (alpha) signify a new era of efficiency and speed for our blockchain. While we’re still refining and testing, these initial results are promising and demonstrate our commitment to delivering cutting-edge blockchain solutions. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible with Solar Core.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm as we work towards a brighter, faster future for the Solar blockchain.
