On 15th December 2022, Solar Core Lead Developer Gym released a 72-page security and analysis report on Solar Core. This report represents an important milestone for our project and will be accompanied by a series of articles that clarify its contents and makes it more accessible for our community.

Today’s article provides a brief overview of the sections contained within the report to give our community insight into its content and depth.

Background Overview

The start of the report explains the origin of the Solar codebase. Solar Core is a fork of ARK Core v3. However, Solar Core has many improved security features over ARK Core. The first section of the report also describes the rigorous testing that Solar code is subject to by the developers, the delegates and the wider community. Security testing of Solar Core is ongoing and relies on a variety of tools. To further enhance testing of Solar Core, v5.0 aims to introduce a public test suite which will be linked to the Solar Core GitHub repository.

Protocol and Implementation Analysis

The ‘Protocol and Implementation Analysis’ section of the report discusses security issues affecting ARK Core. It also goes on to explain how the discovery and auditing of the code shaped the protocol and implementation choices for Solar Core.

Known Issues

‘Known Issues’ explains and outlines the steps which are being taken to resolve any outstanding issues in Solar Core. Solar documents, for instance, are being updated to reflect all changes and improvements.

The report also includes an appendix of security issues affecting ARK Core. These include open, closed and partially resolved issues.

Conclusion

This security and analysis report is expansive and provides a wealth of information that we aim to break into manageable chunks and share with our community. One significant takeaway from this report is that the Solar blockchain is growing and consistently being improved with safety and security serving as the primary drivers behind its development.

Releasing this report publicly demonstrates Solar’s ongoing commitment to honesty, integrity and transparency.
